Frequently Asked Questions

What is Symantec Safe Site?

Symantec Safe Site helps businesses establish credibility online. When a website displays Symantec Safe Site, it shows that Symantec has verified the identity of the website and its owners. The seal also means that the website has passed Symantec’s daily malware scan so visitors can use the site with confidence.

How does Symantec Safe Site reassure visitors?

Growing concerns about fake sites, viruses, and identity theft have made consumers reluctant to do business with web sites they don’t know and brands that are not familiar to them. As a result, small businesses struggle to draw traffic to their web sites and to generate the confidence to buy, click, and sign in online. Symantec Safe Site tells web site visitors that the most trusted brand on the internet has verified the site’s identity and that the site has passed the Symantec malware scan.

How is Symantec Safe Site different from other business seals?
  1. Symantec Safe Site is the only seal backed by the most trusted security brand on the Internet (US Brand Tracker Survey 2009).
  2. On average, the Symantec seal is displayed 175 million times a day on more than 90,000 web sites in 160 countries.
  3. The Symantec seal has an 86% recognition rate among consumers (US Brand Tracker Survey 2009).
  4. 97 of the 100 largest banks in the world, 87% of the largest eCommerce sites in North America and 93% of the Fortune 500 rely on Symantec to secure their web sites.*

As the brand trusted by major banks and retailers, the Symantec seal helps build confidence on all types of web sites.

* Includes Symantec, its subsidiaries and affiliates.

Can Symantec Safe Site really help increase online sales?

Yes. Customer case studies have shown an average increase in transactions of 24% (ranging between 10% and 36%) when web sites display Symantec Safe Site. Sites that display Symantec Safe Site on their pages, and use an SSL certificate during checkout, maximize customer retention and purchase completion.

Can the Symantec seal help increase traffic from search engines?

Symantec Safe Site includes Seal-in-Search, which identifies Symantec trusted sites and display the Symantec seal next to search results in enabled browsers. To see how Symantec Safe Site is displayed in search results, download the free AVG LinkScanner.

In addition, a daily malware scan helps reduce the risk of becoming blacklisted by search engines. No matter how much search optimization and advertising, if a site is blacklisted, it will not be displayed in search results and viewing may be blocked by some browsers.

What is malware?

Malware is a general term for malicious software and is a growing problem on the Internet. Hackers install malware without your consent by exploiting security weaknesses on your server and gaining access to your web site code. The malware code is not visible or easily detected, and may infect customers' computers when they simply browse your web site. Hackers use it to spread viruses, hijack your computer or steal sensitive data such as credit card numbers or other personal information.

Do I need to be the registrant of the domain name?

The domain name which will be associated with Symantec Safe Site must be legally registered and Symantec must be able to verify that the Trust Seal applicant either owns the domain name or has exclusive rights to use it.

I’ve purchased Symantec Safe Site. What’s next?

Once you’ve purchased Symantec Safe Site, you must complete the application process in the account management page and submit it for approval. And, if this domain uses ID Protect, it must be disabled until Symantec has verified the domain ownership.

  1. Log into the My Account area of our website.
  2. If the domain has ID Protection, click “My Domains”. Navigate to the domain, then Manage > Addons. Next, click the "disable" link.

Symantec will first verify the information you provide including domain name ownership, contact information and malware scan. You’ll receive an email confirming the activation of your Trust Seal once validation is completed.

It takes up to 5 days for Symantec to verify identity and approve the Trust Seal. Once approved, you will embed a Symantec Safe Site script in your website's code. The script will display in the My Account area, on your Symantec Safe Site product details page.

I’ve received email confirming that Symantec has verified my identity. How do I get the Trust Seal onto my web site?

Log in. In the “My Services” section, click “Symantec Safe Site”. A link for the code should appear on the product details page. Copy the script in the “Embed” text box and paste it into your web page code.

For more detailed instructions and more size options, go to http://www.symantec.com/ssl/seal-agreement/install.jsp.

If you disabled ID Protection, you can enable it now. Navigate to the domain, then Manage > Addons. Next, click the "enable" link.

What if Symantec rejects my application for Symantec Safe Site?

If your application is rejected, you will be notified and we will issue a refund for your purchase price.

I submitted incorrect information for Symantec’s verification process. How do I correct it?

Contact our customer service to cancel the order and purchase a new Symantec Safe Site subscription.

What if my web site fails a malware scan?

If Symantec detects malware during their daily scan, it deactivates the Trust Seal on the web site and notifies the web site owner by email that it has done so. The notification includes details about the type of malware and the infected pages, and provides a link to detailed information. This notification system allows the owner to take rapid corrective actions and submit a request for a scan to reactivate Symantec Safe Site.
